2024 SOBREMESA

$40.00

Sobremesa - literally translates as dessert, but is also a Spanish expression that describes that period spent lingering at the table long after the meal is finished, talking and enjoying the good company. Hand picked Muscat Blanc à Petits Grains made in the passito method which dates back to the 2nd century BC (then known as Passvm).

Painstakingly sorted by hand onto racks for drying where they spent the next 6 weeks drying in the sun and sea breeze to concentrate the flavour, aroma, sweetness and acidity. Destemmed and macerated on skins for 4 weeks before pressing and maturation in old French oak. No fining. 1600 bottles made.

Orange blossom, candied citrus peel, raisins, jasmine.

“Muscat Blanc. 125g/L RS. Three picks. One rack dried. Second picked at usual ripeness. Third pick dried on the vine. Some love here! Not easy to get this style right. Here’s a very specific style. Golden syrup, peppermint, dried apricot, All-Bran, marmalade (thick cut), almond paste. There’s lots going on here, and while it’s sweet, it also has lots of saline tang and savoury bits built in, acid cuts through, and the finish is long, nutty and sweet with marzipan and orange blossom. Excellent. So nicely done. Touch and go for 94 points really.” - Gary Walsh

“I am all about this. Delicious and slightly weird in the best sense. Slippery texture, sweetness metered by marzipan and nuttiness, minerally cut and an almost, vaguely, Macvin du Jura feel without the fortification. It feels inherently interesting and multi-layered. A unique wine and done really well.” - Mike Bennie

Halliday Wine Companion, 95 Points

“An ode to the sweet muscats of Pantelleria and the commune of Noto in Sicily’s southeastern tip. Not many youthful brands make sweet wine, but here we are. Sweet does it no justice, though. There’s plenty of sugar, but there’s a savoury airiness to it, too – it cloys not. Nutty and saline, with ample orange things – candied rind, orange blossom water, cumquat jam, orange bitters – membrillo, frangipane, gingersnaps, straw, an ozone-like beachy note and just the right level of prickly lift. It’s light on its feet, complex, vibrantly fresh and thoroughly delicious. What a debut for L'Anima – every wine a winner!” - Marcus Ellis
